The 20-minute money reset
Set a timer, use the latest account information you can access safely, and stop after five short decisions. The goal is a calmer next move, not a complete financial plan.
- Minute 0–4: write today’s available cash.
Include checking and cash that can actually pay bills. Do not count a credit limit as available money. - Minute 4–8: list the next seven days of obligations.
Housing, utilities, food, transportation, medicine, insurance, and minimum debt payments come before optional spending. - Minute 8–12: name the tightest date.
If cash timing is the problem, identify one provider to call about a due-date change or hardship option before a payment is missed. - Minute 12–16: move one dollar on purpose.
Cancel, pause, transfer, or schedule one small amount toward the most urgent buffer or target. - Minute 16–20: write the next review time.
Put a 15-minute check-in on the calendar after the next paycheck or before the tightest due date.
Stop conditions
If housing, food, utilities, safety, or medicine are at immediate risk, prioritize local assistance and direct contact with the provider over optimizing percentages. If a collector, lender, or offer is pressuring you to act immediately, pause and verify through official channels.
